Amused...

So my man Snyder decided to post a very pointed entry on his blog yesterday and people got pissed over there and at Story Games. I gotta say I am amused by the whole Gary=Princess Di shit. I wasn't going to really post anything about it when I heard the news cause I don't give a shit.

I will say one thing. Snyder has been accused of saying the subculture is beneath him (which he did not say). Well I am saying it. The subculture is beneath me. How you like them apples?

The guy who for the past three years has looked me in the eye and said into the mic, "What am I excited about at Gen Con? Nothing. There is nothing exciting here," isn't excited by the sub-culture?

SHOCK!

Non. Pas possible!

I'm not that into apples. I'd prefer bananas or maybe pears.

Edit for the J-Rod: I will say one thing. Snyder has been accused of saying the subculture is beneath him (which he did not say). Well I am saying it. The subculture is beneath me. How you like that assortment of fruit from which you can choose what you like?

Keith, Andy, Judd, and The Subculture are on a set of stairs. Each one is above or beneath another. No two individuals are on the same steps. Based on the following logical steps, please place them in order of who is at the top, and what their order is:

* The Subculture is Beneath Keith.
* Judd is Above The Subculture.
* Andy is Above Keith.
* Andy is Not at the Top.

What is their order, from highest to lowest?

Judd, Andy, Jungle Speed, Keith, Subculture, Futurama.

It doesn't matter cause Keith pushed all you fuckers off the steps then sauntered down them...

OMG! SERIOUSLY?

Oh, wait, it's you, and I am completely not surprised you're a jerk because that would be like being surprised I have penis: "Where'd that come from?!" Yeah, right. Carry on, angry polack!

Of course, I am above all of you.

Bah, this reminds me of the Geek Hierarchy Flowchart, of course: everyone thinks they're above someone.

I mean, wouldn't you/we feel that the subculture was beneath you/us if instead we were talking about bowling, or scrapbooking, or snowboarding, or movies? I know that for my part, I don't relate well to large groups of people defining themselves as a uniform entity. I don't want to be absorbed into a Collective. :-\

Subculture is for people who lack the confidence to forge their own identity from their experiences and the world around them.

Some of us have multi-faceted personalities.

We're whole people on our own and consider ourselves part of a sub-culture, this is not "instead".

See this amuses me cause this particular sub-culture likes to think that everyone in it is a unique snowflake...

Well, that kinda contradicts what you said up-thread: "Subculture is for people who lack the confidence to forge their own identity from their experiences and the world around them."

In my opinion, I am doing just that, and part of my forged identity is my experience as a gamer, who is also part of the sub-culture, but then you tell me I'm deluded :P

I am unaccountably bitchy today, and I should be better than that. My apologies. Something's clearly stressing me out and I'm taking it out on the wrong people.

I'm trying to remember when I was last impressed by someone going out of his way to tell me that he felt superior to me. It's been a while. I'm afraid I tend to read such declarations and wonder "What are they compensating for?", knowing how often that's what it is. (I use "afraid" honestly because there are cases where it's something other like compensation. Good generalizations aren't always true. It can be simple ignorance or willful denial of one's own position with regard to stuff in the next paragraph, or lots of other things.) *shrug* I like the apples I've got already, thanks for asking, though. I like gaming with people I like and trust (several of the folks I game with have literally saved my life in times of crisis stemming from chronic health problems, which is about as good as it gets, I think), who broaden my horizons even as we share this particular kind of fun together. I've also got some Granny Smiths here that apparently came from God's own orchard, the crunch is so fine.

I also find that I'm less impressed by claims of self-forged identity than I used to be. I'd be impressed by someone who could do it without drawing on the legacy of common language and knowledge, and without the benefits of being well up the ladder from exploited to exploiter. As it is, it all looks like working with other people's stuff to me. *shrug* again, I guess.

Bruce. I am just going to say this. You make a lot of assumptions about me here and over on John Kim's blog and put yourself on a high horse. I'm not interested in your bullshit and round about ways of trying to make points. For all I care you can go fuck yourself with it. However I will not stand for you sullying the name of the late, great Telly Savalas by claiming he is that half ass writer Hunter S. Thompson (linked so you can sort that out on your own time). Say what you will about me asshole, but leave Kojak out of it!
